Northwest Airlines Pilots Go On Strike
Northwest Airlines pilots walked off the job during a contract dispute halting service at the start of the July 4 weekend. An estimated 50 000 to 60 000 passengers were immediately affected as pickets formed at Seattle and Minneapolis St Paul airports and negotiations stalled after a brief resumed session.

Freighter President Adams Grounded Off Cape Lookout
A 530 foot freighter of 9000 gross tons the President Adams remained aground two miles south of the Cape Lookout lighthouse after grounding Wednesday night with 25 to 30 aboard and containerized cargo. Coast Guard Cmdr Dwayne P. Gatto said tugs and cutters attempted again to free the vessel as weather stayed calm and no damage was evident. The Laurel cutter from Fort Macon Coast Guard Station assisted near Morehead City.
