The practice of hourly whistleouts at City Lake remains debated after a drowning years ago, allowing lifeguards to scan for bodies and forcing brief rests for young swimmers. Officials disagree on its value but it stays in effect for now.
A Thai International Airways Caravelle crashed in a rain squall in Kowloon Bay Hong Kong killing 24 of 80 aboard. The flight from Bangkok, later identified as Flight 601 from Tokyo and Osaka and Taipei, had 58 Americans aboard. Divers searched the submerged wreckage as witnesses recalled passengers rushing for exits.
Joe Ramirez, 19, fights a traffic ticket at the courthouse as his meter runs out. A jaywalking citation follows after a long judge’s lunch, and a meter maid issues another ticket. Premier Ky withdraws from the presidential race to become No 2 on a Thieu led ticket. The Armed Forces Council debated the move as Thieu gains top spot and Ky shifts power, with a caretaker government possible during campaign. Also notes United States tariff cuts under the Kennedy Round and early pricing effects.
The Pentagon conceded a second Haiphong airstrike may have hit a Soviet merchant ship as U.S. planes attacked oil facilities. Moscow lodged a protest after a June 2 incident and noted possible consequences. The Frunze was damaged with at least one crewman killed in the earlier Turkestan raid.
The AP CBS and NBC reviews conclude the Warren Report stands. none of the inquiries uncovers new proof against Oswald acting alone in Kennedy’s assassination. The AP 20 000 word report and CBS four part series support the commission findings while NBC questions Jim Garrison’s conspiracy case and witness handling.
Three houses and an oil company owned by Anson County Board of Education officials were bombed in a racially tense spree. Targets include James A. Hardison Jr.’s Pee Dee Oil Co and the homes of Superintendent Bill Wildermuth and board member Glen Martin, with another cabin owned by Billy Stegall. No arrests reported.
