The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a 3 percent annual freight rate increase for U S railroads, the first in seven years, despite White House concerns about inflation. Rioting youths attacked shops and hurled bottles at police in a mile square area near the White House after several fires broke out. Police said the robbers forced open a 4 by 4 foot cubicle and fled with the boxes weighing 19 and 29 pounds, as manager Earl Erickson and clerk Hans Brinkhouse watched. The gold originated from Canada and was consigned to Caracas, Venezuela.
In a 1962 Plymouth mail truck robbery near Route 3, a woman and two men were indicted on federal charges for stealing 1 551 277 in cash from the truck en route to the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston. The trio faces long sentences if convicted.
In the Mekong Delta operation, about 10 000 troops launched last Friday to clear Viet Cong mined routes. U.S. Command reports 200 Viet Cong killed with 16 Americans dead and 5 wounded. field accounts cite 28 South Vietnamese dead and 50 wounded amid limited other actions. Air missions resumed with 136 sorties after weather cleared.
