The monoplane Three Musketeers circled Roosevelt Field in New York on June 29 as crews chased a new endurance flight record amid sorrow and anxiety locally and across the aviation community.
Frank Hawks completed a non stop flight from Los Angeles to New York in 36 hours 46 minutes 48 seconds breaking the coast to coast elapsed time record. He landed at Roosevelt Field uninjured after a momentary scare when his plane struck a fence. The aviator had started in Los Angeles Thursday to set three records, including a 44 hour round trip, with a later refueling stop and repairs delaying him.
Washington June 29 The Navy awarded contracts for construction of the first two light cruisers in its 15 cruiser building program to Puget Sound Navy Yard and Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp Bethlehem. Bids and estimates on the next three cruisers are under consideration and Secretary Adams said awards would come within a few days.
A new regular passenger boat line between Edenton and Nags Head is organized with its first voyage planned for July 4. The service, to be run by the Shady Side, may later extend from Elizabeth City to Nags Head, creating a direct link previously unavailable among Edenton, Elizabeth City and the beach resort.
Spartanburg, S C June 239 Miss Nora Hicks 71 known here as the first woman rural mail carrier in the United States is dead at her home in Cherokee near Spartanburg. For 19 years she carried rural mail from Cherokee over a route into North Carolina. She had been on the retired list six years Miss Hicks at one time was post mistress at Hicksville N C.
The endurance plane Miss Minneapolis piloted by Thorwald Johnson and Owen Haughland landed in a Langdon wheat field at 11 46 a m due to motor trouble after 150 hours aloft aimed at surpassing the 172 hour 32 minute 1 second record. The flight began at Wold Chamberlain field last Sunday at 5 am, about 15 miles south of Minneapolis.
T L Caudle of Wadesboro was chosen president of the North Carolina Bar Association at its convention in Wrightsville Beach. Debate centered on two resolutions. one backed support for law enforcement and the Eighteenth Amendment, the other urged formal association approval of judge and solicitor candidates. The first resolution was tabled and the second deferred.
Senator Smith of South Carolina said Hoover plans likely omit cotton growers from the federal farm board, denying the industry needed representation. He based his view on information available about the board’s personnel and its balance.
William Thomas Ince, 20, son of the late William H. Ince, announces plans to marry Ada Williams, 18, Miss Florida 1927, with a Beverly Hills ceremony set for July 7. Williams is the daughter of Mrs. John Calvin Williams who moved to California with her two years ago.
Paris June 29. Secretary of State Stimson gave Ambassador Claudel no hope for delaying maturity of the French debt on American war stocks. The French chamber finance committee adjourned until Tuesday to decide on ratification of Franco American and Franco British debt settlements. Claudel said Stimson received the request with great emotion and regret, signaling little likelihood of satisfaction.
Cleveland June 29. Pilots Roy L. Mitchell and Byron K. Newcomb fly over the airport after a 6 38 p m takeoff in a bid to break the world endurance record for in flight refueling. They were refueled at 4 this morning and provisions were lowered to the plane as they aim to stay aloft until near noon Friday Weather was favorable.
Atlanta June 29. A new type of thinking to replace dogma was urged before the National Education association on the convention's second day. William John Cooper urged teachers avoid finality and keep an open mind. W P Morgan urged federal funding to expand teacher training noting growth from 41 schools in 1872 to 209 public normals by 1926 with rising appropriations.
A Tokyo dispatch reports orders issued for punishing officers tied to a grave Manchuria affair though official confirmation is lacking. Named are Colonel Kumamoto suspended from duty. Lieutenant General Saito chief of staff. Major General Nizumachi sentenced to indefinite disciplinary confinement.
Augusto Sandino arrives in Vera Cruz with 25 armed followers en route to exile in Merida Mexico after leaving Guatemala with official permission to reside in Mexico He says he does not know his next destination or duration of exile and criticizes American imperialism for stirring regional conflict while remaining ill and aged 32 despite efforts against the Nicaraguan government
Bobby Jones shot 79 in the final round to finish tied for the 72 hole lead at 249 with Al Espinosa of Chicago. Jones had earlier led in the third round with a 71 while Gene Sarazen and Espinosa trailed. Densmore Shute posted 220 for 54 holes to sit fourth after a strong start.

Four banks in Raleigh Wilmington Greensboro announce a planned merger into the North Carolina Bank and Trust company pending stockholder approval. The new institution would operate under a state charter with branches at High Point Spencer Salisbury Rocky Mount and include affiliated First National Rocky Mount and Rocky Mount Savings and Trust. Total resources would reach 45 million with net capital around 4.375 million.
Charlotte officials led by Mayor George W. Wilson Jr. enforce arterial street rules. Fifty motorists were brought to court as part of a drive to reduce accidents. Drivers must stop at arterial streets and wait for the green signal at busy intersections.
Washington June 23. Speaker Longworth and Rep Tilson expect the principal winter work to be the four billion dollar annual supply bills for government departments and agencies. Tariff revision may wait until the regular session while farm relief and Boulder Canyon measures have moved to the executive side. Immigration quotas will be debated next Monday and reapportionment of the House is assured.

Atlanta reports a drop in Georgia almshouse children from 35 in 1925 to five in 1928 as welfare officials cite unsuitable conditions and push for better care. The state also reduced almshouses from 79 in 1929 to 58 in 1928 and notes 103 counties adopting improved methods for the poor and aged.
The Dutch Enka interests have acquired control of the Glanzoff interests affecting rayon plants worldwide. The deal creates the Allgemeene Kunstyde Unie with headquarters in Arnhem Holland and operational output of about 135,900 pounds of rayon daily from Elizabethton Tennessee and other plants.
