Nye accuses Langer of misrule while Langer touts sound governance and fights to overcome Nye in a heated state and national political scene. In De Queen Arkansas a 98 pound mother, Mrs H T Valentine 27, gave birth early today to four girls. one infant died within hours. The three survivors received nourishment drops and oxygen under heat control in a local hospital. Dr G L Kimball says they have a chance to live.
The Interstate Commerce Commission allowed Pullman to raise charges by five percent after denying a ten percent request. The ruling, issued in Washington on June 28, permits the new rates to take effect 10 days after publication and suggests keeping upper belt rates steady. Eastern railroads had sought higher coach fares, while basic Pullman fares remain at three cents per mile.
The North Carolina American Legion elected Burgin Pennell of Asheville as commander at its annual convention in Winston-Salem. Other results included A. Russell of Salisbury as vice commander and R. Police seek the killer as clues remain scarce. A pocketbook worth about 390 to 400 dollars was taken and another 184 dollars found later. The autopsy confirmed a bullet from a .88 pistol.
London June 26. Duchess of Atholl outlined Spanish rebel guns threatening Gibraltar and asked Chamberlain in the House of Commons what Britain will do. She listed about 45 guns from 5.9 to 15 inches, including naval guns, placed to threaten the fortress from across the strait.
From Hendaye on the Spanish frontier a government dispatch reported rebels slowly lost ground on the Teruel Sagunto corridor as Franco's forces pressed along the Valencia high southeast of Teruel. Valencia advices spoke of heavy counterattacks driving insurgents from Munela de Sa range about 22 miles south of Teruel and 45 miles west of Valencia. On the coast insurgents pressed toward Valencia while Jose Miaja's militia faced renewed pressure to halt the drive.
