Worburn Mass June 27 Daniel F Doherty national commander of the American Legion replies to a Columbia University Teachers College survey labeled fascist and un patriotic by asserting many higher education institutions are hotbeds of Communism.
President Roosevelt has signed the second deficiency appropriations bill to provide funds for starting construction of two battleships and an aircraft carrier.
Mrs. Martha Barkley Ryan, 22, asks a supreme court justice to award her 815,000 a year alimony and 15,000 for lawyers' fees in a separation suit against Basil A. Ryan, heir of a traction magnate. Judge Cotilla reserved decision on funding to support herself and her year old child in Morganton, North Carolina.
A close family source said Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt Jr is expecting a baby this summer. The couple, married last June near Wilmington, Delaware, are the President's daughter in law and his third son.
Washington June 27 Secretary Ickes announced 61,509,478 in public works funds with a call for cities to match the pace to begin projects. Grants of 4,907,457 went to 21 applications approved since the new relief program. 46,602,021 funded five federal departments for public works. Total PWA grants and loans reach 340,215,258. Non federal projects approved totaled 21 with an estimated 9,105,459 in construction costs.
Two white men abducted a driver near Thomasville after a 2:30 a.m. gunpoint theft of 864 dollars. In Illinois a Dessem farmyard confrontation ended with one gunman dead and another wounded after a cross-state pursuit involving about 100 officers and multiple gun battles. The fugitives had earlier abducted a Wilmington farmer and his four-year-old son, with authorities reporting extensive confrontations and a dramatic final capture in a corn field.
Greensboro jur y convict Jerry Clark and Homer Myers of second degree murder for the June 5 hold up slaying of O D Bavender. Judge E C Bivens sentenced each to 80 years at hard labor. An appeal was entered for Myers. Clark’s counsel said no appeal contemplated.
Loyals halt rebel push at Valencia and press a broader offensive on the eastern front. Front lines run from Castellon de la Plana to Valencia with gains noted near Sarrion and Teruel, as government and insurgent reports claim a draw in manpower and air power advantages. A Barcelona dispatch notes accusations of foreign warship involvement in coastal bombings.
President Roosevelt welcomed Prince Bertil and Crown Princess Lou of Sweden at Wilmington's 300th anniversary of the Swedish landing. The prince, suffering a kidney ailment, remained aboard the Kingsholm. Robbery appears motive as items from the City Lunch on Salem Street were sent to the FBI for analysis. $184 cash found on the victim.
Raleigh June 27 Bill Payne and Wash Turner avoided questions as their likely last week looms while fellow condemned man Wiley Brice spoke to reporters on death row. Payne and Turner face Friday execution for the murder of Highway Patrolman George Penn after an escape from a Buncombe county prison farm. Governor Hoey declined clemency though counsel Walter D. Siler sought a new conference. Payne denied confessing to Penns shooting. Turner gave few remarks aside from church ties and a juvenile criminal record. Brice, 35, convicted in 1936 for a Shelly Lea killing during a hold up, also spoke to press.
At the National Education Association convention in New York educators decried the American Legion as fascist and unpatriotic in a 280 page study by Prof. William Gellermann. In Winston-Salem Leonard H. Nason urged Americans to resist centralized rule and questioned modern civilization.
Approximately 500000 WPA workers in 18 southern states will receive bigger checks next pay day. President Roosevelt ordered average increases of about $5 monthly for unskilled workers to bring southern incomes closer to national levels. The plan covers North Carolina to Oklahoma, setting a $1 daily minimum in all regions.
Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese air raids over south China as Chinese and Japanese forces clash in the Yangtze valley below Hankow. Bombing hits the Yuling forts on Hainan, targets in Chao Chow, and damage to a railway line from Swatow to Chao Chow's south. Seaborne strikes threaten Swatow and Nippon troops reportedly on Namoa Island with railway links near Hong Kong Canton disrupted by bombings.
London June 27 AP British Prime Minister Chamberlain faced angry questions in the House of Commons over arming merchant ships after renewed air attacks by forces backing Franco on two freighters near Valencia and Alicante. He said further consideration showed more difficulties and rejected arming merchant vessels with anti aircraft guns. The attack tally rose to 16 on British registered vessels in June, with 59 attacks since the Spanish war began, while Franco's backers threaten reprisals against Italian and German cities.
In Abbeville South Carolina on June 27 Sheriff F B McLane announced a suspect named J T Dr was captured in Lowndesville after a woman identified him as the man who attacked and shot a week ago. The suspect was taken to Anderson for custody while in jail authorities declined to reveal the exact location. Deputies J Bone T D Ferguson and C P rince assisted in the arrest.
