Woman Confesses to Slaying Husband in Gaston County
A Bessemer City woman Mary Lou Smith 52 confessed to shooting her husband Nelson Smith 52 and tried to pin the crime on a former coworker. The confession freed Alion Bell 59 of Bessemer City a meat cutter who was jailed on murder charges. Bell had been accused of the crime but Smith claimed he helped stage the killing to have the story believed. Smith overheard her husband talking to another woman and bought a .22 pistol planning to kill him herself or both. The weapon was found later in a bag in her home. Bell testified he was pressured to deny Smith’s claim of two Black men. Police said Smith’s marriage lasted about 30 years.
