Tobacco crop damaged by rain in eastern sections

Raleigh reports Floyd a State AAA officer and tobacco expert says eastern tobacco crop damaged as much as 50 percent by heavy rains last week. He adds much of the crop can be saved if weather improves and growers farm fields promptly when soils dry.

Protest over slapping of American missionary in Japan

Secretary Hull announced diplomatic representations were being prepared to Japan over a Japanese sentry slapping missionary Dr J C Thompson of New Brunswick connected with Nanking university while he tried to stop the sentry from beating his rickshaw coolie. Hull did not reveal details of the representations.

Monroe declines presidency at Lutheran Theological Seminary

Dr. P. E. Monroe, president of Lenoir Rhyne College, announced he will not accept the presidency of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S. C., to which he was elected.

Roosevelt Signs and Vetoes Bills at Hyde Park

President Roosevelt signed 12 bills and vetoed 18 more at Hyde Park on June 22. Since Monday he has approved 57 and disapproved 18. The desk cleared of Washington measures was briefly filled again when a White House mail pouch delivered fifty additional bills.

The North Carolina Merchants Association elected W. F. Dowdy of New Bern as president and set the next meeting for Durham. Alamance Primary Is Investigated By State Officials

W A Lucas chairman of the state board of elections said complaints from Alamance county citizens about the Democratic primary do not justify a recount. He asked Secretary Maxwell to investigate whether Republicans voted in the Democratic primary and if precinct officials acted improperly. The delegation claimed Republicans voted in both primaries and ballots were counted behind locked doors.

Civil War Veteran A J Wise Dies In Raleigh Home

Raleigh native A J Wise 95 living at the Old Soldiers Home died last night. He left Walter Barfield 96. Four others have died in the last year. The date is June 22 and the report notes Wise was the sole Confederate veteran remaining there.

Mrs Martha Barkley Ryan estranged wife of Basil A Pat Ryan filed a suit for separation from her husband in New York Supreme Court returnable Friday. Negro Held For Questioning In Thomasville Robbery

Police arrested Joshua Black in Thomasville for questioning in the robbery of Pierce's Barbecue stand and assault on Henry Powell. Powell, hospitalized with head injuries, said two unnamed Negroes beat him during the early Tuesday attack and robbed the cash drawer and cigarettes. Bloodhounds traced to Black's home did not immediately explain the arrest delay.
