Southern furniture makers plan price hikes up to five per cent
The industry expects a 3 to 5 percent rise for most furniture lines when the July market opens in the South. Bed prices have already increased and wage boosts of about 5 percent for workers are forecast to spread as costs rise. Industry veteran J T Ryan notes not all lines will rise, but costs will fold into prices amid a competitive market.

States' finances stronger than federal position says Chamber
The United States Chamber of Commerce reports 48 states held about 15.25 billion in cash and equivalents as of June 30 1953, with debt interest under 1 percent while federal debt interest nears nine percent. They argue state and local funding can better meet school needs, noting postwar school construction has surged from 100 million in 1945 to an estimated 3 billion in 1954 and predicting continued progress by 1960.
