Opening OD and AD Stores Show Two Approaches to Attract Customers
OD pursued low costs with minimal store improvements and large bulk purchases to keep prices down. AD focused on visual appeal with bright paint, new windows, lighting, named brands, and frequent displays to draw shoppers, leading to faster sales and restocked inventories.
OD and AD Use Newspapers to Boost Store Traffic
OD initially used house to house circulars but coverage was slow and costly. He then bought newspaper ads reaching thousands daily, attracting more readers citywide. As readership grew, his sales increased and costs per sale fell, allowing lower prices and better values for customers.
OD and AD Advertising Tales
OD failed after a non advertised opening when slow sales left stock unsold and funds tied up. He sold remaining goods at a bargain, while AD grew by newspaper advertising and truthful messaging, expanding store space and staff as demand rose. OD later sought work at AD’s shop, where success came from welcoming customers and stocking desirable merchandise.
