Berlin reports a secret police ordered campaign against Jews expands nationwide with mobs and raids. Foreign consulates seek permission to emigrate while Jews face panic and food access problems. Police claim arrests target criminal elements with no political motive.
Frederick R Robinson, former treasurer of Packard Motor company, greets his son Frederick L Robinson who vanished almost a year ago. The younger man, found wandering on a Norfolk beach, was identified by a photograph and had been missing since July 16, 1937, amid memory loss.
The Chamber of Commerce rejects the measure as largely rewritten and unclear. It notes the bill lacks general rulemaking powers and will spark early regulatory activity with substantial administrative funding already appropriated.
In Nahant Massachusetts on June 18 John Roosevelt and Anne Clark Roose wed at Union Church in a six minute ceremony. The President and Mrs Roosevelt led guests outside to witness the couple's exit amid cheers from a throng of thousands.
Washington June 18 AP Congressional campaigners open attacks as Congress ends its six month session with sparring. Rep Snell criticizes the New Deal for the recession while Sen Barkley defends it and argues the debt rise is smaller than foes claim. A Senate campaign finances probe vows to require donor lists and forbid government agency involvement. Barkley presents a New Deal achievements keynote.
Princess Elizabeth aged 12 will appear publicly as a member and patrol leader of the Buckingham Palace Girl Guides. She and her parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth will attend a march past of 1,000 Guides at St George’s chapel after a national Guide service.
The 75th Congress backed a defense surge with a billion dollars for an expanding army and navy and more than a billion for a 20 percent navy enlargement. The policy strengthens a warning posture toward treaty violators and aims to shape public opinion for stronger diplomacy, drawing attention from Berlin, Rome and Tokyo.
Thousands attend the third Townsend convention in Los Angeles as Dr. Francis E. Townsend aims to secure $200 a month for life. The four day program begins with a rally and Townsend vows to carry the nation by 1940.

In Raleigh on June 18 Governor Hoey commuted B. T. Hall Jr. of Durham after a mother's pleading. Hall had served 21 days of a 1 to 2 year sentence for accessory before the fact to an illegal operation. The governor noted the mother admitted guilt, deplored the crime, and asked for mercy. The prisoner and the woman involved were married and would continue their life together. The act was viewed as extenuating factors in the case.
London reports that financial and wartime pressures hinder Britain's bid for peace with European dictators. Chamberlain faces cross factions demanding firmer resistance while the city pushes to force Germany to honor Austrian loans. Berlin blames no one but hints at compromise talks with France Britain the United States and the BIS to resolve payments. Goebbels accuses Czech provocations as Sudeten demands rise and talks with Prague continue on minority rights and autonomy.
Washington June 18 The first signals of a coming congressional struggle for more uniform freight rates rose as Representative Ramspeck of Georgia threatened to organize a large bloc to push legislation unless the Interstate Commerce Commission acts on the Southeastern conference of governors petition. Supporters say enactment of the wage hour bill gives the South and West leverage in seeking equal transportation charges. Ramspeck argues Eastern and New England lawmakers can no longer oppose equality since wage standards were standardized.
Rebels push along the Mediterranean coast toward Burriana 32 miles north of Valenda as insurgent gains reach 16,600 square miles since January 1 Generalissimo Franco's forces control 35 provinces while the government holds 11 provinces and fighting continues across four others Insurgent air raids along the eastern coast cause about 100 casualties in Madrid vicinity.
Shanghai June 19 AP reports the Yellow River floods forced Japanese on the north central front to retreat from near Chengchow in Honan. Chinese gains come at high cost as floods flood 1,600 square miles, drive 700,000 from homes, and threaten August floods while Lunghai railways reopens behind the flood screen.
The Social Security board says unemployment benefit programs will operate in 28 states starting July 1. Iowa Michigan and South Carolina plan to implement then. Remaining states roll out later in 1958 and into 1959. About 16.7 million workers were covered in 25 states with an estimated 2 million more in the three new states.
The WPA concluded unemployment is lasting and requires a permanent program of economic security. A combined plan of insurance, public works and aid is needed to cover short and long term job loss, with unemployment relief no longer treated as temporary. The report cites ongoing labor market instability and the inadequacy of preindustrial relief.
