Senator Barry Goldwater holds 361 Republican delegates bound by state laws or party actions, more than half of 677 first ballot votes per an Associated Press tally. Additional delegates express personal preference or commitment, totaling 655 needed for the nomination. 118 come from binding primaries and 243 from GOP convention instructions. Montana’s 14 delegates on Friday could push totals if instructed for Goldwater.

Man Slain In N Y Elevator

Leonard Simpson a 63 year old lawyer was killed in a self service elevator in an upper west side building. His wife Selma Simpson discovered his body as the elevator returned to the lobby after he entered the building with her minutes earlier. Police described a possible stabbing with an ice pick and urged sightings of a tall gaunt Negro with mustache seen leaving the scene.

Last Of 6 Escapees Captured

The final of six convicts who escaped Monday from an Avery County prison road gang was captured. Two were nabbed at Pulaski by Virginia authorities, one driving a stolen Virginia car with the guard’s revolver. Albert Ledford and Joe Lee Cothran were taken by Virginia officers. Earlier, three fugitives were found at Portsmouth, Ohio, with a stolen 30-30 rifle. Names identified: Dwight Howard Creswell, Clarence Penley, and J. Francis Thomas. Four of six escaped Tuesday from Craggy Prison near Asheville remained at large.

Colfax Man Killed in Auto Crash Near Colfax

Colfax, N C. James Donald Gray, 30, of Colfax, was killed in a traffic accident three miles north of Colfax Wednesday night. The Highway Patrol said the car left the road in a curve and struck a tree.

Wallace Seeks To Get Name On N C Ballot

Four aides to Gov. George Wallace of Alabama traveled to Raleigh to pursue placing the governor on North Carolina’s presidential ballot. Cecil Jackson said the group would study state filing rules, form a party if needed, and seek 10 000 voter petitions due by July 1. Maxwell noted the filing must include electors and petitions.
