Ballots for the 1962 Democratic primaries were found in a locked closet at the Mary Hill precinct. Absentee and official ballots showed markings, with observers disputing turnout figures. Niigata disaster deepens as fire floods menace city

Niigata Japan reeled from a powerful earthquake as fires broke out along the waterfront. Police evacuated about 7,350 people across 11 prefectures while 24 were confirmed dead, 10 missing, and 282 injured. Oil tanks burned, rail lines were damaged, and authorities warned of possible massive explosions from nearby tanks. Air and naval firefighting aid worked to control the blaze as nationwide help arrived.

Dr. Sharp, named to return to teaching at UNC Law School, has a long career as historian and administrator. He led Hiram College for seven years and taught at Minnesota, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Oregon, San Francisco State, and as visiting professor in Melbourne and Sydney. Born in Kirksville, Missouri, he attended Phillips University and earned a PhD at the University of Minnesota. He served in World War III with naval forces and Allied liaison roles. He is married to a former walk crowds leader and spoke to crowds in Reidsville and Bridge.

Bank Robber Strikes Caroleen Branch for 7000 Dollars

A lone bandit robbed the Caroleen Security Bank & Trust Co branch of about $7,000 shortly after noon. The suspect, described as a white man 35 to 40, 5 feet 8, weight roughly 175 to 180 pounds, wore a gray straw hat and dark glasses and left the scene after the takes. FBI Charlotte office agent Kissiah noted the investigation continues.

Carolinians Move Into Illinois Agribusiness Caravan Tour

Carolinians and South Carolina agribusiness leaders arrived in Illinois for a two day tour of vegetable, swine, poultry and cattle farms. About 150 farm leaders and business men visited four Clinton County farms near Frankfort after a stop in Indiana. They questioned farmers about problems progress and profits observed on the tour.
