In Los Angeles a suit against the Pied Pipers alleges they refused to reappoint John Huddleston after his wartime return. Huddleston seeks accounting and names defendants Charles Lowery Clark Yokum and Jo Stafford, who left to go solo. Hal Hooper now fills Huddleston’s singing spot with June Hutton replacing Stafford.

Bishop chairs the foreign correspondence committee as 7,000 questionnaires go out to report foreign scientists in 40 countries. Col. James Kilian commander of the Lichfield guard house during the war failed to quash charges in a U S court martial. After six and a half hours the military court overruled and Kilian's motion to quash the charges was denied.
White House releases War Secretary Patterson letter pledging wholehearted support to President Truman's proposal for unifying the military services under a single defense secretary. Patterson notes changes will create an economical, effective organization and offers War Department assistance. Secretary Forrestal had not replied.
Reuter dispatch from Jerusalem quotes an official saying nine crews were killed last night in a pitched gun battle with British troops guarding the Central railway workshops in Haifa. Five persons were seriously wounded and 15 were arrested, including one woman.
Informant says bandits in Tel Aviv kidnapping were believed to be members of Irgun Zvai Leumi. British officers were thought held as hostages to force execution of two Irgun members sentenced last week for a March raid on a fish army camp. The raid involved about a dozen terrorists.
President Truman declares Red Cross work can unite peoples and expand global aid as Basil O'Connor opens the 21st convention. He notes wartime budgets will not quickly drop and urges public understanding of sustained Red Cross operations beyond war. More than 6,000 delegates attend from the United States and worldwide.
In Tokyo June 18 Tojo said Japan reserved the right to fight in self defense and attacked without warning if needed. He argued the Kellogg pact and Hague convention did not bind Japan, and that opening a war could be justified by self defense. He labelled U S actions a planned mass massacre and said Pearl Harbor was not a declaration of war.
Nanking reports a Chinese communist spokesman announces peace talks deteriorate as Beijing demands surrender of several northern strongholds and all Shantung coastline. Wong Peng Nan says government memo handed to General Marshall was then given to Chou En Lai without comment. Communists call the proposal unsatisfactory beyond Shantung where Tsingtao remains a focal point.
The 75 year old violinist Fritz Kreisler was reported in very good condition today at the New York hospital after an emergency appendectomy Sunday night. Initial reports had him in critical condition with peritonitis.
In North Carolina fifth district run-off politics Labor and big money clash as Rep. John H. Folger backed by CIO PAC faces Thurmond Chatham, a Winston-Salem Elkin mill owner tied to the Hanes family. Campaign costs and donations show Chatham spent $5,476 and Folger $4,845 in the first primary. Chatham estimates self-funding at $1,166 and Folger $1,268.
Detroit reports a freak tornado crossing into Michigan and Canada causing at least seventeen deaths and over 100 injuries. Search teams traced a hundred foot path of destruction in Canada as the toll rose with 13 confirmed dead and Windsor hospitals counting seven or eight more critically hurt.
Mr and Mrs Martin Cobb of Carrollton describe narrowly escaping a tornado while driving to a River Rouge wedding. They describe a twisting duster like event with a billboard torn free and a house roof tossed skyward, then sped for a viaduct as debris passed overhead.
A blast near Detroit and Windsor caused widespread damage and injuries. River Rouge and Sandwich suffered the heaviest impact with property damage running into millions of dollars and hundreds of people affected.
