Italians resist repeated German and Italian assault waves with aid from Allied troops. Report notes strong defense along multiple sectors, maintaining initiative on much of the front and inflicting setbacks on enemy forces.
The American forces repelled a German assault near the front, dropping the enemy with a hail of shot and shell before they could begin. A wounded American soldier was briefly captured but escaped into American lines after a surprise transfer, then collapsed from blood loss.
A Wood from the unit is reassigned to command duties at Camp Funston after being transferred from the former installation. The move places the officer in charge of operations at the camp under new administration.
Premier Orlando reports Italian troops and allies resist austrian drives along the eastern Montello slopes and Piave line. While some Austrian crossings failed, the overall front remains contested with Italian morale aided by limited German aid on the mountain front.
Washington reports the army casualty list shows 39 names with categories: killed in action six, died of wounds two, died of airplane accidents one, died of disease four, wounded severely twenty four, wounded degree underarm ed one, missing in action one. The list reflects the latest wartime losses as of June 17.
Senator Chamberlain of Oregon voiced support for Provost Marshal General Crowder's proposal to extend the army draft to men aged 18 to 45 during hearings on the 12 billion dollar army appropriation. The House provision authorizing presidential call of all trainable draft-age men received unanimous sub committee approval.
Amsterdam dispatch from June 17 via Wolff Bureau Berlin reports American war prisoners are not mistreated in Germany. They are not used as show objects or subjected to insults or stones, with adequate food provided according to current German conditions.

The Bavaria, a 4000 ton steamer from Cuhba loaded with sugar, ran aground early Sunday on shoals one mile north of the port. Tugs and a government dredge worked all day without success. The ship lies about 200 feet from deep water in an easy position and might be floated at high tide. The crew remains aboard.
Washington June 17 Henry C Stuart former Virginia governor and head of the national agricultural advisory council is designated to represent agriculture in the war industries board He will stay in touch with government dealings in agricultural matters and provide needed information and advice to agencies involved.
London reports the first national restaurant operated by the British government offering a satisfying hot meal at midday or evening for about 25 cents. It seats 200 and serves dinners to outside customers in the evening if a deposit is placed for three-course meals delivered by messenger.
A tornado swept the Tibbetville section of Devey county killing the three year old daughter of A. KE. Tilden and probably injuring a score of others. Communications were interrupted leaving reports meagre from Macon Georgia on June 17.
In the Toul sector, American artillery and machine guns halted a German raid on Xivray. Prisoners revealed a week-long plan and 600 special troops rehearsed behind lines. The raid was intended to advance with little preparatory fire, but U.S. observers and fire inflicted heavy casualties and disrupted the attack.
Mrs. Clark Beeson, a prominent city woman, was found dead in bed this morning around 6. The cause was a stroke of apoplexy, doctors say, after a period of declining health. She leaves her husband and four children, two girls and two boys. She was 47. Funeral at 3 p.m. Tuesday from 603 Richardson street conducted by Rev. O. L. Ruth of Holiness Church. Interment in Oakwood cemetery.
New York on June 17 Cotton was fairly active with irregular fluctuations. Early trade opened steady to up 35 points, July and October futures moved lower later, with July at 26.59 and October at 24.76 as near months covered and war news buoying selling interest.

Washington June 17 Secretary Baker approved court martial sentences of 18 months to 20 years for conscientious objectors who refused military service at Camp Upton New York and Camp Gordon Georgia. He supported returning such men after the war to the countries of their preference, noting relatives in those nations.
Numa Stewart son of Mrs. Ella L. Stewart was badly hurt when an auto driven by Roger Griffith struck him and 10 year old Grissom on East Green street near Lawrence Grissom. Stewart remained in hospital with bruised ribs while Grissom suffered minor injuries. Griffith is said to be blameless.
Patrolman Allen and Patrolman Brindle intensified efforts to curb speeding in the city. They halted multiple vehicles on North Main South Main and Montlieu Avenue with many numbers sent to the secretary of state for identification. G C Kennedy of Hillsboro faced charges for driving without a visible license and speeding on Main Street. Dennis Jennings paid costs for speeding on a motorcycle.
Tokio ends last year with a population of 2,249,990, up 65,000 from the prior year. The ten year average annual gain stands at 74,000.
The War Department announced the revocation of orders assigning Major General Leonard Wood to command the Western Department and his temporary reassignment to Camp Funston Nebraska. No reason was given and reports suggest a forthcoming special assignment of great importance for General Wood.
Prof. C. A. Smith, Elm Street graded school principal, named chairman of the war savings drive for High Point township. He seeks teachers and high school students to help compile resident lists using tax books, at Deputy Sheriff Wagner's office on Washing ton Street. Volunteers are urged to assist to ensure a strong local showing and fund the government securities.
Amsterdam reports Emperor William congratulated the crown prince after battles that yielded eighty five thousand prisoners and more than one thousand guns. The official dispatch quotes the emperor praising these military gains and the troops' achievements.
Homer F Teague a popular High Point drug clerk returned home Saturday night after enlisting at Camp Jackson Columbia in May as part of the last High Point increment He did not qualify for general service due to a slight foot defect and expects recall within three or four weeks possibly to a different army department than field artillery to which the unit is being transferred.
