Rosenbergs Lose Bid for Last Minute Stay in Execution
In a sudden courtroom move just before year end, attorney Finerty urged an original writ of habeas corpus and a stay of execution for the Rosenbergs, citing perjury claims and new testimony. Chief Justice Vinson, noting the court’s impending adjournment, refused to grant the stay but promised prompt consideration of the motions. The Rosenbergs, convicted in 1951 of atomic espionage, had previously delayed outcomes through appeals. Separately, Italy has imported American quail, lacking native equivalents.
