Decision On Rosenbergs Deferred By Supreme Court

The Supreme Court deferred a decision on granting a stay of execution for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg until Monday. If denied, they could face Sing Sing’s electric chair Thursday night, with possible last minute clemency from the White House. Emanuel H. Debits Rise Across Carolinas Led by Charlotte Volume

The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reports May debits rose in most North and South Carolina cities. Charlotte led with 353.31 million dollars, a four percent increase. Durham 93.01 million, up 16 percent. Raleigh 168.32 million, about unchanged. Greensboro 118.10 million, up 10 percent. Winston-Salem 137.21 million, up five percent. The data reflect the value of checks written against demand deposits. In Raleigh a Civil Air Patrol search-rescue operation began with about 50 planes, part of North Carolina's fifth annual mission, as 400 CAP volunteers from 28 squadrons assist in aerial search operations. More than 400 CAP members participated, with pilots and ground crew briefed by Maj. Don Harry of Charlotte, CAP mission commander. Meanwhile at Chapel Hill some 300 high school students prepare for Tar Heel Boys State, hosted by the American Legion and driven by UNC’s Institute of Government, running Sunday to next Saturday. Basil Sherrill leads the program with registration starting at 1 p.m. Sunday and a 5:45 p.m. supper in Lenoir Hall.

WILMINGTON June 13. Bill McMillan of Rocky Mount was swept into office as North Carolina American Legion department commander at the four day state convention ending at Thalian Hall. George Lukherd of Shelby declined to run after a near end. Other officers elected include Bill Staton Sanford judge advocate and Rev. Harold Leatherman Henderson chaplain who won over Rev. Hutchinson Charlotte 482 to 184. McMillan, an infantry sergeant in World War II with the 78th Division, pledged to boost Legion membership toward 75,000 from 48,491. He succeeds C. LeRoy Shuping, who retired with ovation. State reports and Sen Willis Smith remarks on immigration closed the day.

Danville Hit By Tornado Hail Storm Causes Wide Damage

A tornado accompanied by hail cut a five mile path near Danville Virginia injuring several people in traffic incidents. North Danville and Glenwood suffered heavy damage with unroofed homes and downed lines. A Negro youth was electrocuted while surveying hail damage.
