About 75 people gathered at a Cleveland district relief office shouting we are hungry and we want food orders. Two emergency squads ended the uprising after police arrived as the crowd threatened to force entry into administrative quarters.
Three hundred wounded Spanish militiamen, advance guard of the government’s 43rd division, fled across the Pyrenees into France today. An insurgent offensive in the Bielsa valley appeared to end the troops who had long held out despite encirclement.
B. H. Meyer of the Interstate Commerce Commission predicted in Washington on June 15 that the United States faces the greatest railroad salvaging operations in history unless carriers' status changes. He voiced this in dissent to an ICC ruling that denied Associated Railways permission to acquire and dismantle the bankrupt Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad.
John L. Lewis CIO chairman pressed House leaders for action on a labor bill pigeonholed by the Rules Committee. The North Carolina Supreme Court upheld the murder conviction of William Payne and John Turner for Highway Patrolman George Penn’s death. The decision sets July 1 as the death date pending possible gubernatorial intervention. The court found no reversible error and noted Penn acted in discharge of duty.

The act creates an administrator in the labor department and aims to reach 40 cents per hour within five years with a 44 hour work week first year and 40 hours thereafter. In Ashland Pennsylvania a father Peter Shinskowsky 45 and his son Peter Jr 17 were recovered after being trapped in a makeshift mine since Monday. They appeared in good condition, wrapped in blankets and moved to a hospital. The elder’s daughter Mary was present and exhausted while their mother rested at home.
Willie Fields and C. J. Boyd narrowly escaped drowning when their loaded truck plunged from the Roanoke river bridge between Scotland Neck and Rich Square. Fields rescued Boyd who was pinned in the submerged vehicle. Both men were taken to Edgecombe General Hospital with Fields suffering nervous shock and Boyd with leg and face injuries.
Boss Collins of Level Cross town ship near Randleman is jailed in Asheboro awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of shooting and killing James EB Muse 24. The shooting happened last night in Collins home bedroom around 9 30. Muse died instantly. Collins admitted the shooting and surrendered. Muse drove the car during a trip to Greensboro when the argument began. Muse survived by a widow a son a daughter and several relatives.
Guilford county board of elections completed an eight day probe into High Point precincts finding no irregularities in five and dismissing three officers in precinct No 5 for wilful violations. The board also recommended new registration before 1940 and commended the state board for thorough inquiries.
Shanghai authorities report cholera has reached epidemic proportions with 123 cases in hospitals. Of these, 73 are from foreign administered areas. A Japanese spokesman notes eight Chinese deaths in Japanese occupied Soochow and 14 more contracted the disease.
Police investigate a massacre at a deserted roadhouse in Tamaqua Pennsylvania. Victims Peter Bisciotti Gustine Starace and Leonard Pugliese all from Philadelphia were shot with pumpkin balls from a sawed off shotgun. Detectives from Philadelphia joined the inquiry and two suspects were arrested.
The Senate approved a compromise flood control bill of 375 million dollars, clearing a major obstacle to adjournment. Senator O Mahoney led a long speech marathon threatening changes, while leaders eyed a midnight train home. The wage hour measure had been enacted and a 3.75 billion relief and public works bill received partial approval.
London reports show Neville Chamberlain facing discontent from Conservatives over his pledge on protection forBritish vessels trading with Spain. They demand stronger reprisals and a tougher stance, while labor leaders push for more debate on intervention in Spain.
Franklin Pierce McCall, 21, found guilty of kidnapping five year old James Bailey Cash Jr. by Circuit Judge H F Atkinson who said he would sentence tomorrow morning. Evidence showed McCall confessed to stealing the boy named Skeegie on May 28 and collecting a $10 000 ransom.
