It Really Pays To Eat Dairy Products in North Carolina
Raleigh reports June Dairy Month highlights dairy value in diets. Extension Service dairy specialist R B Redfern says 25 cent quart of milk equals 42 cents in food value and cottage cheese at 22 cents provides about half of daily protein with only 8 percent of calories. He notes milk and dairy offer cost effective nutrition and North Carolina ranks low in per capita income, stressing maximizing food value from dairy.

Agricultural cautionary tale on soil fumigants and livestock loss
North Carolina farmers report fertilizer and fumigant errors causing plant deaths and cattle losses. A Greene County grower damaged two acres by using fumigant-contaminated water for transplanting. Others see cattle deaths from toxic plants in low, wet fields and fish pond algae controlled by precise copper sulfate dosing per acre. A Wake County landowner expands to 222 acres, with state help designing a master farm plan including a concrete silo and drainage.

Slightly Smaller Potato Crop Seen In North Carolina
In Raleigh Henry Covington of the State College Extension Service says the North Carolina sweet potato crop will be slightly smaller than the 45 acres harvested in 1953 while the national crop should be similar to last year. Planting is under way and stands look excellent though cold weather delayed field setting. This may improve fall quality as earlier plantings often yield turnip shaped roots.
