Recaptured 5 Miles From Prison James Earl Ray

James Earl Ray was tracked down near Brushy Mountain State Prison after a three hour chase covering five miles through a wooded valley. Two bloodhound sisters Sandy and Little Red led to Ray who offered no resistance and said I feel good. Don Ray Caylor was recaptured in Oak Ridge, leaving Douglas Shelton at large. Governor Blanton praised the capture and authorities called it a major Tennessee manhunt ending Ray's escape.

Black Youths Open Fire At Whites In Johannesburg

In Johannesburg a gang of three black youths opened fire on four white workers at a department store garage. Two mechanics were killed and a third was critically wounded. Police seized three pistols and two grenades and sealed off the area near John Vorster Square as investigators pursued possible links to racial unrest.
