Forty Four Nabbed On Liquor Charges In High Point Raid

Enforcement officers conducted a large liquor raid in High Point arresting 44 people on state and federal charges. Twenty three were held on federal whisky tax violations and 21 on state prohibition offenses. The roundup spanned 7 45 p m to 3 00 a m with ABC ATU police and sheriff’s deputies. Bond set at 500 for federal counts and 300 plus per count for state charges. Arraignments and hearings scheduled for early December and June 30 Municipal Court.

French Assembly votes confidence in Laniel premier

The French National Assembly defeats Premier Joseph Laniel 306 to 293 on a vote of confidence. The result does not force his resignation under the constitution, which requires 313 votes for an absolute majority. An aide indicated Laniel may stay, with President Rene Coty urging him to continue unless forced to quit. The assembly recessed after the vote.

Laniel to Meet Coty as French government faces possible fall

Suspect Jailed In Kidnapping Case In Phoenix

A 41-year-old Phoenix father of two was jailed for kidnapping after Evelyn Ann Smith identified Daniel J. Marsin in a lineup. Marsin, an unemployed welder, denied guilt and offered changing stories while police investigate ransom details and compare a typewriter and ransom note. Marsin, 5 feet 4 inches, 123 pounds with green eyes and brown hair, was held after being found near the ransom payoff point sandals in hand.

U S May Seek Hemispheric Conference on Guatemala

U S officials indicate a Monday call for a special meeting of foreign ministers in Montevideo to authorize a quarantine against Guatemala. Proposals include intercepting ships carrying Communist arms and forming a five nation war commission to enforce the measure and monitor Communist activity.

Mundt Calls For End To Senate Feud Amid Hearings

Acting Chairman Mundt urged an end to a long running feud between Senate Investigations aides that erupted into sharp exchanges during the McCarthy hearings. Roy Cohn denied threatening Sen. Jackson while Robert Kennedy and others accused each side of personal hostility. Cohn pressed to question Jackson about remarks to McCarthy.

Nixon Escapes Injury After Auto Collision

Vice President Richard M. Nixon escaped unhurt when his automobile was hit by a swerving car that then struck a Secret Service vehicle. Nixon checked for injuries, then continued to his parents’ home in Whittier en route to a Whittier College commencement. The incident involved Leonard H. Fire traps six dead in Chicago apartment blaze

A fast spreading four story fire at 1702 Erie Street in Chicago’s near northwest side killed six people and injured nine as residents described a deadly scene. First Deputy Fire Marshal Albert Petersen pegged damage at 20 000 while police investigated an alleged gasoline arson.
