Medal of Honor winner admitted for observation in Illinois
Kenneth Kays, 24, a Medal of Honor recipient who says he cannot adjust to hero status and has grown about 100 marijuana plants, has been admitted to a Chester state mental health center for observation. The admission followed an emergency hospitalization petition from State's Attorney Robert Hawkins at the request of Kays' father. Hawkins noted Kays was incoherent at his trailer home after authorities found him shouting and irrational. Kays had been convicted for cultivation and possession of marijuana and was on probation. He described Viet Nam experiences and his Fairfield actions as part of a personal freedom quest, saying marijuana helps him discover himself and that the law has no right to confiscate it. He crawled under fire to aid wounded soldiers after losing his left leg in Viet Nam on May 10, 1970.
