Washington AP reports two Senate votes nearly guarantee a two year draft extension. Delays loom past June 30 with many amendments and a showdown over funding for Indochina. House already approved a two year extension.
Measures seek to prohibit busing that endangers health or schooling. Rep. Cobb sponsors a plan allowing parent petition for reassignment if elementary trips exceed seven miles or junior high trips exceed fifteen miles. Other bills address voting majorities, municipal proximity rules, and fixed legislative seats.
Government inspectors report more than half of 90 nursing homes in New York and Oklahoma failed basic care standards. Doc visits, nurse supervision, and fire drills were deficient, with many patients possibly served at lower cost. Payments to six Oklahoma homes were suspended or closed.
Rep. Hunter Warlick proposes a bill to prohibit new municipalities within one mile of a 10 000 plus town within four miles of a 25 000 plus city and within five miles of a 50 000 plus city. backed by the North Carolina League of Municipalities, the measure targets towns around Charlotte and Asheville amid opposition from local governments.
A 58 year old coal miner hijacker armed with a pistol commandeered a United Airlines jet after takeoff from Charleston West Virginia bound for Newark New Jersey. Flight engineer Greg Colliton a Vietnam veteran talked the hijacker into surrendering with passengers and crew unharmed. FBI agents arrested Glen Elmo Riggs at Dulles International after the jet landed.
The U N Development Program spent a record 232 million dollars in support of 3 494 projects worldwide. Hoffman reports funds matched by 275 million in cash and in kind toward four major activity fields. Examples include veterinary vaccine progress for East and Central Africa and training in Fiji tapa cloth production.
Researchers testified before a congressional panel that a new drug family antagonists may end heroin addiction rather than substitute one dependency for another. Trials with about 400 addicts showed promising results, with cyclazocine highlighted as a candidate for rapid use pending funding. Naloxone already treats overdoses.
New York AP reports comedian Joe E. Lewis died Friday at Roosevelt Hospital after days in a diabetic coma. At 69, he built a 49 year show business career from Las Vegas to New York's Copacabana, earning fame and substantial wealth while battling drinking and gambling.
In Garden Valley Idaho a 6700 pound 113 foot high balloon used by Boise Cascade Corp to lift logs from remote timberlands over treetops. The system costs about 80 per thousand board feet versus 35 for truck logging and aims to replace or supplement road-building while reducing erosion fears in fragile areas.
AP Raleigh report says NC lawmakers move toward legalizing domestic quail farming for food. The House approved the bill to let quail be raised and sold and sent it to the Senate for concurrence. The sponsor is Sen John Burney.
