The Enterprise reports 871 votes cast from dawn to dusk as High Point township voters brace for a fiercely contested gubernatorial primary. Registrars and election officials will guide voters at polling places from before sunrise to after sunset with sample ballots available and broadcasts planned for results.
Belle Bennett Andrews, once charged with attempting to harm Miss Mabel Hutchins of Norlk, was released after paying a $2,000 fine. Judge Marshall T. Spears offered a choice between two years in state prison or the fine. Hutchins, once married to the pendant's former husband, reportedly guided the incident ending with Andrews bound in a swamp.
In Nashville, Governor Hill McAlister intervenes after Sevier county youth receives a six month prison term for shielding the actual assailant. The governor says the youth acted to prevent the real criminal from punishment after advice from the prosecutor.
CHICAGO June 5 Canby Jr 16 a top high school athlete and son of a Chicago broker was found dead by his own action in a bedroom at midnight in his Barrington Illinois home. A shotgun lay beneath him as investigators pursue confirmation of a self inflicted shooting in the north shore suburb.
Greenville police pressed a probe into counterfeit currency received by several locals. Three men were recently charged with passing the fakes as officers here continued to seek the source.
Charlotte reports Anne Cannon Reynolds Smith wed Lindsay Plumly on May 17 in Bel Air Maryland. Plumly is a Winston-Salem native and nephew of the late Bowman Gray. The ceremony marks Mrs Plumly's third marriage amid Reynolds fortune ties and ongoing family disputes involving Joseph F Cannon and Brando Smith Jr.
June 6 report from Elizabeth City notes three unidentified African American youths bought pennies worth of candy from R. C. Winslow and then robbed him. The incident lacks detailed descriptions or motives, with no arrests reported.
Southern Chinese forces move north with little opposition and seize four towns in Hunan province. Chinese reports say seven Japanese-paid spies were captured and executed as part of resistance preparations. Washington June 6 President Roosevelt and the nation honor the late Speaker Joseph W. Byrnes with lying in state as officials and foreign powers bow during the tribute. Bankhead of Alabama delivers the eulogy amid mourning. Snell calls Byrnes a personal friend and real man.
Secretary Wallace ordered Agriculture Department experts to draft relief plans for farmers in drought stricken southeastern states. A congressional delegation from Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia urged action after touring Florida, Alabama and North Carolina and pledged to back any needed legislation this session.
Under orders from the state department Boaz Long American minister to Nicaragua prepared to inform Latin American governments that the United States would not interfere in Nicaragua's political disturbance. Secretary Hull said the United States would not intervene directly or indirectly in the domestic affairs of any American republic.
Hospital attaches said a one pound four ounce baby born here to Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Cornwell had died. Doctors said its chance for life at birth had been 1000 to 1. The infant occurred in Wilson on June 5 with the hospital reporting the loss.
Edna Hamilton an 11 year old girl from Mt Gilead was fatally injured when she fell from an automobile while en route to a church service. The accident reportedly occurred on a Saturday afternoon near the town.
Venice report says Mussolini and Austria’s Schuschnigg met for two hours to map Italy’s future if it leaves the League of Nations. Aims include potential alignment with Germany while Austria balances between Nazi and Fascist blocs. Mussolini stressed Italy’s continued military strength.
Prime Minister Baldwin restored Sir Samuel Hoare to the British cabinet as first lord of the admiralty after his resignation over the Italo Ethiopian war. Hoare had been ousted last December for his agreement with Pierre Laval on a compromise plan with Italy.

He pledged a 40 hour week vote and collective contracts with paid vacations while warning against panic aiding enemies of the people’s front. Strikes closed major Paris stores and meat markets as unions pressure for food workers gains.
Madrid reports arms smuggling aimed at revolutionists as monarchist rumors spread about a rebellion against Premier Santiago Casares. Alfonso Mariol directs three platoons of shock police to Pamplona for house to house searches. one man arrested, Lieut. Col. Alensan dro Utrilla prominent monarchist.
The senate agreed to a house resolution for a recess from Monday June 8 to Monday June 15. Senator Robinson said the senate would meet briefly Monday to adopt minor conference reports and then recess without further business.
Chief Justice Alfred A. Wheat of the District of Columbia Supreme Court rules on the Public Works Administration power program. He upholds the program as constitutional under NRA and Emergency Relief Act provisions while allowing suits by Alabama Power Texas Utilities Oklahoma Utilities and Town Light and Power to proceed. The ruling denies broader invalidation and notes continued injunctions in force. Duke Power Company appeal referenced.

Police seized six men in Down River areas for flogging an Ecorse steelworker over missed meetings while three others were arrested and six more sought on kidnapping and assault warrants. Judge James E Chenot noted the clerk’s attendance at a Black Legion meeting was questioned before his resignation.
New York stock activity opened with slight recovery attempts but failed to sustain momentum. Several issues edged higher in quiet trading while leaders mostly slipped fractions or more. Nervousness over foreign affairs again weighed on sentiment as bonds and commodities showed mixed moves and currencies held near the dollar.
