British and French lines stiffened along the front repelling renewed German attacks. American machine gunners fought with high accuracy at Chateau Thierry where a section became No Man’s Land. Germans failed to break the Marne defenses and withdrew after shelling Morlancourt.
Dr. William Jennifer, special examiner from the U S Department of Labor, visits to discuss farm labor conditions amid food shortages and wartime needs. He promotes mutual farmer laborer cooperation to boost food production and urges universal industrial activity. speaks tonight at the negro Baptist church at 8:30.
In France an American patrol clashed with a 17 man German party early today. Three Germans were reported killed and another American patrol destroyed an enemy concrete observation post.
London reports German troops attacked British lines northwest of Amiens. They were supported by heavy artillery but were repulsed and left prisoners in British hands.
Orders for the mobilization of 40 000 negro draft registrants for general military service were issued by Provost Marshal General Crowder. They will entrain from June 20 to 25 from 20 states including North Carolina with 1 000 slated for Camp Taylor Kentucky.
Charles W. Fairbanks former vice president and former Indiana senator died at his Indianapolis home at 8 55 tonight. Death followed chronic interstitial nephritis a long standing ailment. Family members except Maj Richard Fairbanks in France were at his bedside.

N E Russell of 331 West Russell Street reports a large 40 inch black snake that sought indoor comfort. The reptile hid under a dresser and was eventually killed after spirited attempts by several family members, drawing a crowd to the street.
The American steamer C Mengel was sunk Sunday afternoon 100 miles off New York. Eleven crew members were brought to port today by a Danish steamship. The commander said the U boat had sunk three schooners and three steamers earlier, including a large passenger vessel of 5 000 tons.

Ten year old Glenn Wright of Edenton took arsenic while visiting his uncle at Freeman's mill. He survived after prompt medical care and was treated at Duncan sanatorium in High Point where officials report he is doing nicely.

The Carolina disaster prompted a German slogan warning not to use wireless with the promise of no shots. 240 survivors report the 19 year old wireless operator Edward Vogel defied orders before the captain ordered him to quit. 250 survivors arrived in New York today, leaving 29 missing from the crew and passengers.
