After sinking the steamer Carolina, a submarine shelled escaping boats causing heavy casualties. Survivors were landed today near Cape May as debris and bodies were reported, with many injured and one body found amid shattered wreckage.
Evidence from a British steamer shows the German submarine shelled lifeboats from the California. An empty Carolina motor lifeboat with a pierced hull and a splintered oar indicates machine gun use. A man's cap and biscuit tins were found aboard. The Sabine and Nantucket both reported submarine activity near Charleston and Frying Pan Shoals.
A maritime disaster update reports the death toll under 300 with 331 missing, including 202 passengers. Authorities continue search and recovery efforts for the submerged vessel and crew.
After ten days in American waters, German submarine activity has caused minimal military impact. Despite numerous ship recoveries and missing crews, no transport ships bound for Europe were sunk and total American tonnage destroyed remains about 20,000 tons gross, mostly coastwise sailing vessels.

The steamship Carolina boat with 19 survivors including two women was landed at Lewes Delaware. The coast guard service sent the message to the New York and Porto Rico line today. All but one of the 19 survivors were passengers.
The City of Columbus of the Savannah line, feared sunk, is safe in an Atlantic port harbor. It had been anchored unaware of its identity until the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation company ship arrived. No message ashore initially aroused concern, but the vessel sought refuge and all aboard are reported well.
The steamship Grecian, according to reports, has arrived at an Atlantic port carrying the crew of the schooner Jacob M. Haskell who were picked up after distress at sea.
Three hundred passengers and crew of the torpedoed steamship Carolina were picked up at sea in open boats by the schooner Etta F E Douglass. The schooner anchored a mile off an inlet this afternoon awaiting orders. Seven crewmen were landed at the inlet wharf by a coast guard life boat, including Martin Carroll of Newark and six Porto Ricans. They said they had a tough time.
A damaged American tanker, reportedly attacked by a German submarine off the U S coast, arrived at an Atlantic port after naval tugs towed her in. Details of the encounter were not released.
The captives were brought to the coast guard station where they were provided with meals and basic sustenance after detention.
An Atlantic Port reports coast wise freighters reaching harbor today bringing survivors from ships sunk by German submarines in southern waters.
Washington reports all 111 coastwise ships under railroad administration were in port and accounted for before noon today. The status confirms ships were secured and safe despite ongoing conditions.
Paris June 4 American troops joined the fight on the western edge of the Champaign salient and halted the German advance near Neuilly wood. A bold counterattack repulsed the enemy as French and American forces held the Marne front, while the German push in the Oureq valley yielded ground and the town of Villy-la-Poterie fell. Further south French losses were light.
New York stocks opened strong today with yesterday's late rally extended. Steel equipment and the war group led the advance with one to two point gains while shipping largely ignored the submarine menace.

Washington reports a recent Allied air raid on Cologne killed 146 people and injured about 150. The city’s residents were said to be in a state of the most absolute panic.
Dr Dred Peacock of High Point, former president of the institution, delivered the commencement address at Greensboro College for Women this morning. He spoke at 11 30 o clock to a large audience as the closing exercises of the year began. The commencement season will end at 8 30 tonight with class exercises.
An announcement today states Emma Dugdale stood the operation well and is improving in a very satisfactory manner after undergoing surgery last Friday.
Members of the Philathea class of the First Baptist church will hold an important business meeting at Miss Laura Dodamead’s home at 8 o’clock this evening. A full attendance is desired.
Relatives in High Point were notified Tuesday that Wilford Cox has arrived safely overseas with American forces. Private Charles Shore has also arrived safely overseas, according to information received by relatives here Tuesday.
Nantucket Mass June 4 two American aviators Ensign Roleau and Merchant Harrington were brought to port by the patrol boat Sadie after being rescued from a disabled hydroplane ten miles southeast of Sankaty Head. The machine sank soon after the men were taken off. They had forced to alight on the water yesterday due to engine trouble.
More than fifty aircraft supplemented by hydroplanes patrol the Long Island coast with lookouts for submarines. Observers report patrols reaching 15 miles offshore and later extending toward the New Jersey coast. Military sources refused comment though French British and Italian airmen may join the effort as training camps diversify.

All male persons born between June 6 1896 and June 5 1897 inclusive must register on June 5 1918 between 7 and 9 pm. Registration occurs at the local board office or another designated place. Go in person and have your card filled and certified. mail it with a return envelope to your home local board. Penalty for not registering is a misdemeanor with possible imprisonment and induction.
More than 100 young men of High Point will register for war duty tomorrow as government officials oversee the process at the exemption board in the civil service room. Squire J. D. Latterfield and L. J. Ingram will staff postings from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with residents urged to register before noon and take steps to have cards mailed to their home boards by tomorrow night.
In Lexington on June 4, Mrs. J. Graham Howe testified about alleged relations with J. Franklin Deaderick since 1914 as part of the defense of her husband in the killing case. She described weekly meetings, Deaderick’s coercive behavior, and a February confrontation. prosecutors pressed, the defense rested later that day. The report also notes a Dublin AP item on Irish recruiting orders.
