North Carolina Symphony Nears its First Major Milestone
In Chapel Hill on June 4, the North Carolina symphony marked a milestone after 14 years of growth. The group delivered 104 concerts across 50 counties, drawing 110000 in audiences including 77300 children and 33500 adults in a nine week season. The orchestra, assembled state wide with local rehearsals, faced many obstacles before gaining state support. Organized in 1932 with Colonel Joseph Hyde Pratt as president and Lamar Stringfield as conductor, it later benefited from Dr. Benjamin F. Swalin’s reorganization and securing a $2000 annual appropriation by 1943.
