General Marshall's committee of three will sign a 15 day truce in Manchuria as a step toward permanent peace between the Chinese government and the Communists who have fought for 18 years. Lu Chung-Li announced the armistice and named three negotiating points including ceasefire and army reorganization. The truce takes effect after signing with Marshall, Chou En-Lai, and Chu Yung-Chang, while headquarters move to Changchun to implement the accord.
A early morning fire swept the 22 story La Salle Hotel in Chicago's loop, killing at least 57 and injuring around 200. The blaze began in the No 5 elevator shaft and spread rapidly as guests slept, with many victims leaping from windows or perishing in bed. Fire crews battled the flames until about 3 30 a m as bodies were recovered from the scene and morgue overflow.

Washington June 5 7 Senators weary from long wrangling prepared to reject a draft less draft plan aimed at delaying induction of 18 and 19 year olds. The senate voted 58 to 4 to resume drafting teens and uphold selective service law amid strong opposition to any delay.
In Charlotte Dr. C. C. Warren president of the State Baptist convention said he will ask the Baptist General Board at its June 13 Winston-Salem session to call a special meeting to consider the Reynolds foundation gift to Wake Forest. The Wake Forest trustees requested the session this week. The foundation totaling about 10 750 000 would require the college to move to Winston-Salem. Warren plans the special meeting in Winston-Salem on a yet to be decided date.
William Taylor, 50, was struck by a passing car in Chicago and treated at Grant Hospital. An X-ray revealed a broken ankle and a broken leg bone. The driver, Dr. Frank L. Andrews, resident physician at the hospital, took him in for care.
Bread lines stretched across the United States as a wheat shortage hit mills nationwide. Miller federation officials warned of widespread shutdowns, with 80 to 90 percent of flour mills affected, while an Alaska plan and a larger winter wheat crop offered limited relief by midsummer.

Battalion Chief Eugene Freeman 55 the only fireman killed perished while directing the response and receiving last rites at St Luke's hospital.
