Craven County youth given life term for rifle murder
Ernest Ray Simmons, 18, pleaded guilty to first degree murder under a new state law and received life imprisonment. Superior Court Judge Henry L. Stevens Jr. handed down the automatic sentence after the plea. He was charged with the rifle murder of 50 year old Joe McGee during a robbery attempt in Craven County on April 20, 1951.
