Salary rise cut as Bridges advises change

Raleigh June 3 AP Secretary Bridges of the state salary and wage commission suggested to Assistant State Highway Commissioner Witherspoon that the 48000 annual salary increase proposed for highway employees be cut in half. He noted the commission could revise or lower the scale under 1925 acts if officials push raises without commission approval.

Bloodhounds Used to Track Attacker in Rutherfordton

Bloodhounds were called in to track an unidentified white man who attacked a young girl near a factory in Rutherfordton. The assailant choked her into unconsciousness, struck her with a rock, then fled. A posse led by Sheriff W C Hardin and Chief R L Houser hunted for the suspect overnight.

Ants Do $1,000 Damage To Durham School

Durham June 3 AP A white ant invasion at Bethesda Consolidated School in Durham County causes about $1,000 worth of damage to woodwork floors and wainscoting. Superintendent Luther Harbour notes nearly all wood is chewed and will need replacement. Several Durham homes have also suffered insect-related repairs.

Despatches from Guadalajara report Arthur Brewer an American coal merchant died from pistol shots fired Wednesday by Javair Diaz in a business quarrel. Diaz escaped and police launched a search in Mexico City on June 3.
