Kirkman Wins Senate Seat Over Carruthers in State Race

O Arthur Kirkman defeats Joseph T Carruthers Jr in a bid for the State Senate aided by a strong Point Township showing and rural votes. Final unofficial totals show Kirkman 9,462 to Carruthers 9, etc. Four winners in the House race are Clyde Shreve Crissman Joseph Hunt and Thomas Turner with votes listed.

Atlanta Man Hurt Alighting From Eastern Plane

Woman Struck and Killed by Freight Cars in Hendersonville

In Hendersonville on May 31 a 45 year old woman, Lena Hogue, wife of Charles Hogue, was fatally struck by ten freight cars on a switch line around 1 30 pm. The noise from a passing train reportedly prevented her from hearing the approaching cars and she died instantly. An IC investigation reviewed the incident.

Legislature Candidates Are Chosen in North Carolina

Raleigh May 31 Candidates for the 170 Senate and House seats in the 1953 General Assembly were chosen today in local Democratic and Republican races across North Carolina.
