Two New Soil Program Rules Aid Drought Farmers

The AAA issued two changes under the Soil Conservation act to help east central farmers meet drought stress and still qualify for 1936 farm program payments. The first allows land to rate as soil conserving if seeded by September 1 with soil preserving crops and no soil depleting crop is harvested. The second pays for land seeded with perennial grasses or green-manure crops if earlier soil-building crops failed, enabling clover fields seeded to alfalfa in August or September to collect payments within the soil-building limit. W G Inn notes these changes help dry-area farmers and may benefit others in the region.
