Washington August 1 A new insurrection charge was added to the case against John L Lewis and his industrial union allies to be tried before the American Federation of Labor executive council. The charge relates to plans to organize structural steel workers alongside production workers in a broader drive. Philip J Murray of the United Mine Workers said the committee planned to bring both worker groups into the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers. John F Frey of the federation metal trades department supported the original insurrection charges and warned that suspending the Lewis faction would violate craft unions rights, naming the structural iron workers and the bell makers as examples. Frey argued the intention to violate rights indicated insurrection.

Asheville August 1 four dark hairs from a white man's head and a pair of scissors were recovered near the Battery Park hotel as investigators probe the July 16 death of Helen Cleven Ger 18 year old New York University student. Police say the scissors showed a blood stain reaction and the hairs may prove crucial in locating the murderer. Hair samples from hotel nightwatchman Daniel H Gaddy were checked but did not match.

Sterling W. Powell a 16 year old farm boy from Grant Nebraska was jailed on charges of threatening the life of child star Shirley Temple in a 25 000 extortion plot. Federal agents arrested him at his farm home with sheriff H Bechtel saying Powell admitted sending a letter to George F Temple father of the actress demanding 25 000 dropped from a plane near Grant May 15 or Temple would be endangered.
Bayonne New Jersey police say Gladys MacKnight 17 confessed to killing her mother Helen Mar Knight 47 with a hatchet after a quarrel while her 18 year old chorister sweetheart Donald Wightman was also booked on murder charges. Wightman initially supported her story then changed it and accused her, as both were held after all night questioning.
