A Japanese Boeing 727 with 162 aboard and an F86F fighter collided over Hokkaido and crashed. The fighter pilot survived, but rescue teams found 56 bodies by nightfall. The jetliner carried 155 passengers and seven crew including one American. The crash prompted a temporary halt in air self defense force training as investigators probe the disaster.
