A new English alphabet called augmented Roman will be tested in September with 1,000 five and six year olds in 24 British schools. It uses 43 letters 24 old and 19 new, omits Q and X, and each letter has a single sound. Children switch to the regular ABCs at age seven, and experts expect reading to take half the current time once learned.
