Stock Market Mixed, Moderate Upswing Early Friday

New York stocks showed mostly irregular results with a modest overall uptick at noon. The Associated Press average of 60 issues rose about 0.50 to 248.60 as Industrials gained 1.30, with rails and utilities flat. Bethlehem and Chrysler led gains while Ford weakened on profit taking. Du Pont and GM posted small advances as trading remained active amid mixed moves across sectors.

Gangland Blast Ties to 1959 Burglary Case

An explosion in a quiet neighborhood killed Richard Blaney and left $20,000 in cash and jewelry missing. Police questioned Joanna Blaney and neighbors. dynamite connected to the car began the blast, igniting the engine and shattering nearby windows. The case ties to Berkery Staine and Poulson, previously charged in the Rich burglary, with Blaney testifying and others out on bail. Vincent Blaney had also been indicted in the burglary, linking family and gangland figures to the crime chain.

Gagarin Leaves Havana for Brazil After Cuba Visit

Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin departed Havana for Brazil after a four day visit highlighting Moscow's support for Castro's revolution. Castro and his Cabinet saw him off at the airport. He spoke at Havana University and noted space flight cooled warlike tempers in the United States. Castro marked the eighth anniversary of the 26th of July Movement and announced a planned single socialist party. A Castro message praised socialist solidarity against U.S. imperialism.

High Point Pastor Named New Wesleyan Dean at Southern Pilgrim

Colfax NC The North Carolina Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church moved Rev. Philip J. Birchall from Ennis Street Wesleyan to dean of Southern Pilgrim College in Kernersville. He will deliver his final Ennis Street sermon this Sunday after moving his family to the campus. His successor at Ennis Street will be Rev. Lyman Lance of Washington DC. The conference announced numerous pastoral changes across High Point Asheboro and Winston-Salem areas as part of three day gatherings at Colfax with about 500 attendees and C W Levin of High Point elected to a third term as conference president.
