Half of County Jails Inadequate
RALEIGH July 28 R Eugene Brown director of institutions and corrections of the state welfare department said more than one half of the 100 county jails in North Carolina were inadequate as to size safety and cleanliness Brown made a detailed report on conditions of the jails which he said have an approximate average daily population of 1500 Although the 1933 legislature passed an act authorizing district jails for contiguous counties each county still has its own jail.

Police seek occupant of a blood stained car abandoned in Milwaukee. A license shows John Knox Ritchie, 27, of Palo Alto California, a veteran affairs cook, left July 18 for a veterans camp in Statesville North Carolina seeking work. A strong box held $600 in currency and 25 counterfeit half dollars.
