Senate GOP leaders announce cooperation to speed passage of President Kennedy's enlarged defense funding bill after a party policy meeting in Washington. The plan aims to secure approval for the $3.5 billion defense request and bolster national security initiatives.
President Kennedy calls for a swift mobilization to counter the worldwide Communist threat. He aims to add 217000 military personnel, boost defense spending to 47.5 billion and expand Army Air Force Navy and Marine forces while keeping taxes and powers ready if needed.
President Kennedy asked Congress for 3.5 billion dollars to reinforce U S military strength for a Berlin showdown with the Soviet Union He also sought authority to call up reserve units extend enlistments and lengthen tours of duty for National Guard and regulars He urged NATO members to accelerate force readiness toward a 30 division goal and warned of no surrender in Berlin.
West Germans praised Kennedy's firm stance while Western allies backed his call to strengthen defense. Tass claimed the speech exploited a supposed threat to justify arms racing. Nehru era officials in New Delhi criticized higher defense spending but welcomed the door open for peace talks. Adenauer and Brandt lauded U.S. leadership.
