Purchase of Chimney Rock Offered to State

An offer to buy Chimney Rock and 885 surrounding acres for 250000 was taken under advisement by the Parks Committee of the State Board of Conservation and Development. Realtors Wisner Chamblee and Bruce Peabody represented the private owners seeking funds to reinvest in higher yield enterprises. The owners indicated private sale was possible but preferred state ownership. In 1956 the park earned a net profit of 2300 on an 83000 loss. Separately Brunswick fishermen told the board that local oyster legislation harms conservation programs in Brunswick New Hanover and Pender counties by allowing out of season home use harvests.
