City Donates Steel for Sixteen Tanks to WPB
High Point city officials meeting in a called session donated steel to the War Production Board sufficient to produce sixteen medium tanks or 560 75 mm howitzers. The council authorized WPA to remove street car rails except those used by the High Point Thomasville and Denton Railroad for WPB defense efforts. Frank G. Scott of WPB said about 250 tons of rails could yield 11,200 50 mm cavalry machine guns or 560 16 inch naval shells. Removal and street repairs cost about $60 a ton, with work starting in about three weeks after repair materials are secured. Rails on Main Commerce to English, Main Mallory south, Main English north, English Main to Pine, Pine Street, and Green Mangum east are owned by city, abandoned by Duke Power and the HPT&D Railroad. WPA will remove rails and repair streets with minimal traffic disruption.
