Farmers Use Duke Forestry Methods to Market Own Timber
In Durham and four surrounding counties a Duke University Forestry School program with Farmers Mutual Exchange helps farmers sell wood from their land. Trained foresters advise thinning and harvesting, warehouses in five counties market the lumber, and markets opened in Pitsboro and Carrboro have already sold over 12 000 this year. The five year Rockefeller funded project aims to become self sustaining and to spur similar cooperatives statewide.
