300,000 Stand In Rain As War Hero Is Laid To Rest
Washington July 20 a sentinel kept vigil at General of the Armies John J Pershing’s Arlington grave as 300000 mourners braved a thunderous rainstorm. A 72 hour guard watched the grave and flags flew at half staff for 30 days. Thousands of service members led a four mile cortege from the Capitol to Arlington with Eisenhower Bradley and Truman in attendance. The service featured a 19 gun salute and taps as Pershing’s casket was laid to rest near the Unknown Soldier tomb.
