Canton aviators desert Hong Kong by deserting with 60 airplanes.
RALEIGH July 18 The Intensive heat in several sections of the state has caused several concrete highways to buckle up. Chairman Capus M Waynick of the state highway and public works commission said asphalt roads also show an inclination to boil under the heat but the boiling tends to cement the surface. The patching and recondition of surface treated roads this month has been of a better type as scientific and technical study is considered before work.
Partial cloudiness today with noon conditions. North Carolina expects scattered thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and cool overnight. South Carolina and Georgia forecast partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with scattered showers on Sunday.
Chicago reports widespread rains and cooling breezes end heat wave across Minnesota Michigan and Wisconsin with high death tolls in the past two weeks. Forecaster Lloyd says relief may spread to the region while drought areas receive showers lowering crop losses and dollar values drop in Chicago corn pits. Continuous cooler weather forecast for several days and rainfall totals small but widespread.
Police report two men held in Lexington on robbery charges for the Garrell's Service Station holdup between Thomasville and Lexington yesterday. An attendant said $10, a shotgun, a rifle, four cigarette cartons and a slot machine were taken. a pistol was used. The suspects were in a stolen car found to match an earlier theft near the Stanton clinic, reported by C. C. Newton. the car bore the same license.
Raleigh July 18 William C Pressly president of Peace Junior College announces Miss Mabel Pugh of New York has been chosen to teach art and related subjects at the school for the coming year.
Mrs. Thomas F. McAllister of Grand Rapids, national committeewoman of Michigan Young Democrats, told the fifth North Carolina convention that the party now recognizes the government must aid youth and the aged laborers and consumers. Governor-Elect Clyde R. Hoey spoke at luncheon after Sen. J. W. Bailey fell ill. LeRoy Martin chaired the morning session. The meeting ran over an hour behind schedule.
New York July 18 showers in the corn belt and favorable industrial news kept the stock market on a fairly even keel. Recovery vigor was limited outside specialties though several issues rose to five year highs. Transfers ran about 500000 shares at the close.
Granite Falls July 18 B. B. Teague 45 WPA field engineer died of a heart attack while driving near Granite Falls. Dr. O J Cooning reported no fatal injuries on the body. Several boys riding with Teague were slightly hurt.
A confessed kidnapper testified that former St. Paul Police Chief Tom Brown was allocated a $25 000 share from the Hamm kidnapping proceeds. Safety Commissioner Barfuss suspended Brown from the auto mobile theft unit pending further inquiry and said he will be discharged if any improper police association is found. The witness said the gang divided $100 000 ransom with $78 00 allocated to each participant and $25 000 set aside for Brown.
Ashland Virginia July 18 Carter Glass 78 year old Democratic senator delivered a fiery address at Randolph Macon College climaxing Patrick Henry bicentennial events. He condemned the administration as a government of privilege and discrimination and faulted Congress for surrendering constitutional functions to the President and aides.
Governor Ehringhaus named Oscar Barker of Durham chairman and created a five member gas commission to study a state owned gasoline terminal and price discrimination. Joining Barker are Rep D L Ward Craven County Rep T L Royster Granville Senator E V Webb Lenoir and Senator Harriss Newman New Hanover.
In PRIE Pennsylvania a Sunday school teacher’s wife Irene Weed 32 and their four year old son David Charles Weed were found beaten to death in their home. A second child is severely injured and may die. The father Samuel C. Weed 40 was detained after being found near his house and allegedly confessed. He also was injured and taken for treatment. Police say he said he struck his wife and children and asked if they had gone to heaven.
Reports from Spain say a rebellion in Spanish Morocco spread to Andalusia with garrisons in revolt. In Melilla nine were killed, many wounded at Larache, and a general strike followed as troops seized civilian posts and public services. Frontiers between French and Spanish zones were cut.
An unidentified young white woman about 18 was fatally injured when struck by an automobile on the Greensboro High Point highway at 5 AM. James H. Ctnarell of Burlington said she stepped in front of his car as she attempted to hail a ride. He was released on $500 bond. The woman died at a local hospital at 10 AM after refusing to reveal her identity.
A North Carolina crash killed William Covington Miss Elizabeth Covington and Maude Moore Steele. Funeral for the three is set for 10 a m Sunday at the Methodist church in Asheboro. Mrs J Stansill Covington, injured, remains in critical condition after the collision near Asheboro.
The Townsend national convention adopted a resolution stating it shall not endorse any presidential or vice presidential candidate during this campaign. Delegates debated endorsements but the motion passed with few dissenters. Dr Francis E Townsend said he would not vote for Roosevelt or Landon and would support Lemke of North Dakota for president.
The Free City government announced sweeping laws targeting opposition to the Nazi party. Measures allow dissolution of groups, unchallengeable police actions against assembly and press rights, three months protective custody, and forbidding parliamentary editors and Jewish ritual slaughter.
Raleigh reports from R Bruce Etheridge director of conservation and development indicate higher tourist numbers across the state than in several years.
A passenger train struck a car carrying nine people from Farrell Pennsylvania killing all aboard. Victims included Mr and Mrs Harry Schuster and their three daughters plus four relatives from Farrell. The car was dragged to a trestle and plunged into the Raisin River near Dundee Michigan.
Governor Ehringhaus appoints Victor Bryant of Durham as chairman of a state commission to study alcoholic beverage control. Members include L. R. Varser Lumberton John Robinson Charlotte Lee Gravely Rocky Mount Thomas W Raoul Asheville R F Beasley Monroe and Charles Hines Greensboro. The 1935 act ratified the New Hanover county liquor law and later Pasquotank acts authorized stores in eastern counties.
Twelve bodies were recovered from ruins after a major earthquake that struck Tuquerres yesterday. Relief divisions began arriving from Ipiales and Pasto as communication remained down. Tuquerres with about 8500 residents sits near a high altitude volcano in Narino department.
Asheville July 18 Chief of Detectives Fred Jones said an arrest was expected soon in the assault killing of Helen Clevenger of York. A 27 year old bellboy Urey, described as tall light colored and well educated, was in custody for questioning as detectives pursued leads and awaited lab results.
