Harris Survey Finds Voters Favor Regional or National Primaries

A Harris poll of 1,439 voters shows 54 percent favor a four-regional primary system and 60 percent back a single national presidential primary, while only 17 percent want to keep the present state-by-state method. The survey notes objections to inconsistencies in delegate rules and the dominance of small voting blocks. It contrasts regional primaries championed by Sen. Walter Mondale with advocates of a national primary who say it broadens access and reduces regional influence.

Wagner Opera Festival Enters Second Century

Bonn West Germany AP reports the Wagner Opera Festival in Bayreuth marks its 100th birthday amid controversy. The event runs July 24 to August 28 with 60,000 fans expected to attend a July 23 ceremony by President Walter Scheel. A new production of The Ring, directed by Patrice Chereau and conducted by Pierre Boulez, tops the centennial program. The festival complex and archives were purchased for 4.8 million dollars by a public foundation, with Wolfgang Wagner continuing to run the annual event. The piece notes tension over Nazism legacy and questions about Bayreuth’s ongoing central role for Wagnerians.
