Durham man Lonnie D. Barefoot 45 who faced trial for his wife’s hammer slaying two years ago hanged himself at the state hospital. Coroner I. M. Cheek said Barefoot used a rope from the building to loop over a door transom after slashing his wrists and ankles. He had been ruled mentally incompetent and detained for trial.
