Man Rides Niagara Falls In Rubber Ball
Nathan Bova, 30, of New York rode the 161-foot Horseshoe Falls inside an eight-foot rubber-coated steel ball. He survived with minor injuries, was detained on illegal entry, and claimed the stunt to prove love and to integrate the falls. Bova cited plans with Joan Lussier and compared to past survivors, while noting the ball cost about 5000 dollars and a snorkel device aided the ride.

Dr. Brank Proffitt of Western Carolina College was named director of the two year merit pay experiment for state teachers. He previously led McKee Laboratory School and taught at Western Carolina, with prior roles as Jackson County teacher principal and Tryon schools superintendent. The 1961 legislature approved $200,000 for the program in one or more districts to reward exceptional teacher performance. Dr. Carroll, state superintendent, praised Proffitt’s training and urged experimental study of merit-based pay as a method to recognize unusually competent teachers.
