Navy Bandsmen Rise to Action Roles and Training
Navy musicians serve beyond music, steering, shooting, tending wounds, and swabbing decks. Washington Navy Yard trains about 2350 musicians in a one year course, with two thirds already holding college degrees, many recruited from major orchestras. Since 1935 some 800 have graduated, including a Lexington unit praised for wartime wounded care. The Arizona band earned a fleet championship before Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Trophy was later named in memory of the fallen crew.
