Dorothea Dix Hospital Faces Loss of Accreditation
A Raleigh state mental hospital Dorothea Dix failed to win renewal from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and risks losing nearly 2 million in annual federal Medicare and Medicaid payments if its appeal fails. The commission cited fire safety upgrades, grab bars, corridor-facing patient rooms, nurse call systems, privacy upgrades, and tighter staff bylaws as needed changes.

Malpractice Insurance Reform Law Struck Down by NC Supreme Court
Raleigh officials say the ruling will have little immediate impact. The court voided a 1975 law creating a reinsurance exchange to require all insurers to offer malpractice coverage and pool risk. Despite the decision, the NC Medical Society and Hospital Association plans and St Pauls Fire and Marine Insurance keep issuing policies. Insurance officials consider amendments to meet constitutional tests while health care coverage remains available through existing plans.

Carey Prefers Olympic Games To Convention
In Plattsburgh New York Gov. Hugh Carey would rather attend a sendoff for 177 Olympians than host the Democratic National Convention. Secretary of State Mario Cuomo told the athletes that some politicians try to gain points by rhetoric rather than hoops and assured the Olympians that Carey’s duty kept him at the convention.
