Aviation Pioneer Carl Spaatz Dies at 83 in Maryland
Washington AP Gen Carl Spaatz who led air campaigns that smashed Germany and bombed Japan, first Chief of Staff of the U S Air Force, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at 83. A West Point graduate, Spaatz helped build the postwar air force and directed SAC in Europe before D Day. He retired in 1948 and lived in Chevy Chase, Md.
