Enterprise staff writer reports the Southern furniture market entering its fourth day with dwindling buyers on Friday. Manufacturers praised indicators of a late year upswing, while retailers remained cautious, stocking mid range pieces and proven styles as demand varied across spaces.
In western Colorado a large manhunt for a young gunman continues after two state officers were killed and two wounded during a daytime shooting near Kremmling. The suspect, driving a recently purchased Iowa car, remains at large.
Charlottesville Virginia AP reports University of Virginia psychiatrist Ian Stevenson believes evidence from a 10 year study supports possible memory of past lives. He will study children in India and Ceylon with grants from the Parapsychology Foundation seeking to prove the soul survives physical death.
West Germany's Konrad Adenauer says the mass refugee movement from East to West Berlin shows the East German regime is increasing pressure on its citizens. He notes scarce food and new controls as drivers, and rejects direct talks with East Germany or a 52 nation conference. West Berlin remains inside East German territory under tight air corridors.
A federal judge in Tampa dismissed the government’s mail fraud case against Teamsters president James R. Hoffa and two co defendants. Judge Joseph P. Lieb ruled the Orlando grand jury was improperly selected and that the indictment may be refiled if the grand jury is properly chosen. Hoffa Henry Lower and Robert E. McCarthy Jr faced 12 counts alleging use of mail interstate telegraph and telephone facilities to defraud the government.
Gov. Terry Sanford announced Charles F. Hayworth of High Point was appointed to the State Board of Conservation and Development. J. W. Morgan, a local attorney who ran Sanford’s campaign, was named to the eight member North Carolina Railroad Board.
Episcopal minister Grant Muse, a Freedom Rider, returned from Mississippi where he spent 23 days in jail. He described abuse by jailers at Parchman penitentiary and said prisoners lived in a 6 by 9 foot cell with minimal food after the first days.
In Jerusalem Adolf Eichmann clung to his rumor of honor as an SS officer while denying that Nazis who killed Jews were criminals. Prosecutor Hausner pressed him on loyalty oaths and orders, and Eichmann admitted the pogrom was among history’s most heinous crimes but claimed no direct role in gas chamber orders.
Washington reports the economy grew at about 12 billion dollars annual rate in April-June, signaling a brisk recovery from winter recession. GNP could vary by up to 2 billion when July revisions apply, with official estimates around 510 to 514 billion, Treasury forecasts suggesting 530 billion by Q4 and about 570 billion by year end 1962.
Governor Sanford unveiled a dropout reduction campaign in North Carolina. The program, from the Optimist Clubs of North Carolina, creates a governors committee to work with optimist members to contact dropouts and coax them back to school. Sanford noted 43,404 dropouts in 1959-60 and warned that ongoing dropout rates threaten future employment and state growth.
Paris President Charles de Gaulle warned on television that the Soviet plan to settle Berlin's fate unilaterally would threaten world peace. He urged cooperation among Washington London and Paris and said the Soviets must face responsibility for any crisis. Bonn demanded free elections before any German peace treaty, stressing self determination. West Berlin remained calm as refugees fledEast Germany at about 1000 daily while Adenauer met Brandt.
Olivia Brayden, a 23 year old dental nurse in London, kissed Yuri Gagarin outside the Soviet Embassy. She called him the most kissable man in the universe and said she would remember the moment. Gagarin appeared amused as his security restrained the scene and he moved on to a reception.
